President avoids scandal in Christmas speech

In his annual Christmas address, to be aired Sunday evening, German President Christian Wulff did not mention the loan scandal that has dogged him throughout December, instead highlighting racism and political extremism.

"Everyone in our country must be able to live safely. That's true for everyone," said Wulff.

Referring to a series of murders carried out by an underground cell of neo-Nazis, uncovered earlier this year, Wulff said, "So it shocks us all the more that criminals blinded with racism planned murders on people of foreign background over years."

The president called on people to stay alert, and to be ready to "stand up for democracy and the life and freedom of all people" in Germany.

Wulff said his meetings with relatives of the victims of the murders had been deeply moving. "Many told me that they did not only lose a loved one, but that they were suddenly suspected themselves. Even friends and relatives withdrew from them," he said.

"There is no place for xenophobia, violence or political extremism in our country," he said, before calling on Germans to build an open society together. "That starts in everyday life – it's up to me what kind of spiritual climate pervades my family, my religious community, my district or my club. Being open to foreign people and foreign things starts small."

Wulff also spoke about Europe in his speech, which was recorded Wednesday in the company of around 70 German citizens, including firefighters, care-workers, religious ministers and immigrants.

He said that Europe stood for "the great values of freedom, human rights and social safety."

"We can only achieve all these things together," he said. "Saying anything else might garner short-term plaudits, but it is wrong. We Germans will stand in solidarity with Europe."

Businessman on hunger strike outside Foreign Ministry

A businessman is camping out in front of the German Foreign Ministry on a self-styled hunger strike, in fury at the government’s refusal to help him after a deal went sour in the United Arab Emirates.

Mustafa Mutlu, 54, from Aachen, has been in front of the ministry in Berlin since the start of September, occasionally eating fruit but otherwise fasting in a desperate attempt to get attention for his cause.

Mutlu, who is a Turkish citizen but has lived in Germany for around 30 years and has a family here, is surrounded by two large signs which read, “Hunger strike.”

“I’m going to be here as long as I can until I am taken to the hospital,” he told The Local. “It’s the principle of the thing.”

He said a deal between his construction company and a partner in the United Arab Emirates in the mid 1990s went wrong, and claims he was ripped off to the tune of around €260,000.

The German embassy initially offered to investigate and mediate the dispute – only to drop out due to his Turkish citizenship, he said.

He has remained in dispute with the government since then, demanding more help, while the Foreign Ministry says he needs to get a lawyer in the Abu Dhabi.

Finally, fed up with the situation he decided on the protest, which he said he would continue for as long as necessary.

“The Foreign Ministry and the Germany embassy in Abu Dhabi have been involved in the case for several years,” a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman told The Local in an email. “The Embassy and the Foreign Ministry have advised Mr Mutlu repeatedly
to engage a lawyer to represent his interests.”

The spokeswoman later said that officials could do nothing more to help him even if Mutlu were a German citizen.

Mutlu said he had consulted lawyers and police in Abu Dhabi who were unable to help him, and that the Turkish embassy was of no use either.

“I’ve lived here for decades,” he says. “Only the Germans can help.”

He sleeps on a bench near the entrance to the ministry, forcing the sharp-suited diplomats to skirt around him on their way into and out of work.

“I have no other option and that is my final request to you,” reads the text on his placards, which state that the German government is his last hope.

He said he was separated from his wife and that his children; a 11-year-old son and 17-year-old daughter, were not aware of his protest.

Mutlu spends his days sitting on the bench and chatting with passers-by or visiting a nearby hotel where the staff lets him use the toilet or drink warm tea.

“My bones are aching, my stomach is empty, but I’m not moving,” he said.

Fishing enthusiast makes monster catch

A German fishing enthusiast has snagged a massive 29-kilogramme salmon in a northern Sweden stream, four years after first casting his line in Swedish waters.

After an hour in his one-man boat on Sunday, with no sign of life in the Bergeforsen stream, German Uwe Lehrer suddenly felt a strong pull in his rod.

At first he thought he’d snagged something on the stream bed, but he was actually combating a 29-kilogramme salmon, among the largest ever caught in Sweden using a rod and reel.

“It was very exhausting,” Lehrer told The Local.

“I’ve caught a lot of salmon so I could tell this was an especially big one.”

The massive fish had at first kept quite still, lulling Lehrer into thinking he'd hooked a log or a rock.

But as he prepared to free his hook, the fish suddenly pulled away, dragging almost 200 metres of line with it.

Lehrer, who originally is from Stuttgart in Germany, has lived in the Medelpad region in northern Sweden for four years and is an avid sports fisherman.

While he admits the 29-kilo salmon is certainly a big fish, Lehrer has caught bigger, including an 80-kilo catfish and a 250-kilo marlin.

But the relatively small salmon still put up a comparable fight, Lehrer said.

“A marlin is easier in the way that the water isn’t full of trees for the hook to get caught in,” he chuckled.

“I got stuck twice with this one so it sure was a struggle.”

After bringing his catch home, Lehrer put the fish on a digital scale which showed a weight of 29.2 kilogrammes.

Close to a record, but not quite, Lehrer thought, recalling having seen records of a 31.5 kilogramme salmon being caught in Ljungan in northern Sweden.

What he didn’t know was that the Ljungan salmon was caught during prohibited season and thus hadn’t been approved as a Swedish record.

Thus, Lehrer’s fish constitutes a new record for a rod-caught salmon, besting the previous record from 1992 of 28.72 kilogrammes.

However, to officially get accredited for catching the biggest fish in Sweden, Lehrer would need a clear photo with an object of reference next to the fish.

The fish also needs to be weighed on a state approved scale, with witnesses.

Thus, despite reeling in what seem to be a record-large fish, Lehrer's name won't likely make the official Swedish record books.

Now his massive catch is chilling in the freezer, waiting for departure to Germany.

“I have a friend down there who will preserve it,” Lehrer told the Sundsvalls Tidning daily.

URGENT UPDATE 6th October: The situation in Ayutthaya is getting worse. There is now flooding in the city and very bad traffic on the main highway. Although some tourist attractions might be still open, the situation could change very quickly. I’m going to try and go up there on Friday to see for myself. The roads might be a bad idea so I was thinking about the train. But, I am now hearing some sections of the Ayutthaya line are flooded and the train may or may not be running. I cannot get through to the 1690 hotline. The problem at the moment is that if I can get there tomorrow there is no guarantee I can get back.

5th October: The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has issued the following situation update about the flooding in Ayutthaya Province:

The province of Ayutthaya is experiencing floods due to seasonal rains that are heavier than usual. While the flooding is widespread in Ayutthaya’s low-lying agricultural and industrial areas, as well as many areas adjacent to major waterways, there is limited impact on tourism in the province. Most tourist attractions in Ayutthaya are not affected by the floods. Tourists continue to travel to Ayutthaya. The occupancy rate for accommodations in the province remains high, with visitors from many nations including China, Belgium, India, Japan, Singapore and the Philippines.

แต่เวลาสี่ปีที่ทำงานรับราชการ นับว่าได้เห็นการขับเคลื่อนประเทศในหลายรัฐบาล ซึ่งเสียดายเวลาเหลือเกิน ที่ประเทศของเราไม่สามารถก้าวกระโดดได้ การขับเคลื่อนเพียงแค่พยุง สถานะทางการเมืองและเศรษฐกิจไปได้เท่านั้น แม้แต่ตัวแทนของต่างประเทศที่ถามภาครัฐในเหตุการณ์ของเดือนที่แล้วแสดงท่าที ที่ชัดเจนในความเห็นหลายๆอย่าง ไม่ต่างกับคนไทยในประเทศเลย เป็นที่ตระหนักกันอยู่ทั้งนั้น เพื่อผลประโยชน์ของชาติ เรามัวรีรออะไรกันอยู่หนอนี่
แต่ก่อนอยู่แต่กรุงเทพพอออกมา อาศัยต่างจังหวัดถึงรู้ว่าความแตกต่างมันชัดเจนเหลือเกิน กลไกการทำงานของรัฐเหมือนถูกล็อค ไม่สามารถคลายได้ ศูนย์กลางของอำนาจและผลประโยชน์เป็นสิ่งที่เด่นชัดจับต้องได้ แม้แต่การบริหารจัดการในส่วนปริมณฑล โอกาศของชุมชนจำเป็นต้องพึ่งพานายทุนเจ้าของโครงการจัดสรรมากกว่าองค์กรการ บริหารระดับท้องถิ่น เพราะภาครัฐไม่สามารถจัดการสาธรารณูปโภค การคมนาคม พื้นฐานได้ร้อยเปอร์เซ็นต์ แม้จะมีงบประมาณและการจัดการภาษี ที่ใช้การได้ในระดับหนึ่ง พอมีปัญหาเรื่องความปลอดภัยมั่นคงเข้ามาเพื่อเป็นประเด็นทางการเมือง ทำให้เศรษฐกิจถดถอยในจังหวัดนั้นๆ เป็นการลดความสำคัญ หรือดิสเครดิต ผู้บริหารจัดการท้องถิ่นในระดับจังหวัด เป็นเรื่องน่าเศร้าใจ หาก เอาผลประโยชน์ของบุคคลหรือบางกลุ่มธุรกิจ มาก่อนผลประโยชน์ของประชาชนที่ไม่พึงประสงค์จะพึ่งสวัสดิการของนายทุนหรือ นักเศรษฐกิจการเมืองในพื้นที่แต่ต้องการสวัสดิการภาครัฐในเรื่องโครงสร้าง พื้นฐานและอื่นๆโดยตรง

คงจะผู้คนผิดหวังอยู่มาก ภาครัฐเราจึงไม่สามารถรีครูตคนที่เอกชนสามารถจ้างเข้าไปทำงานด้วยค่าตอบแทน และสวัสดิการสูงๆได้ นอกจากประเภทเรียนดีแต่ยากจน จำเป็นต้องใช้ทุนของภาครัฐ หรือจำต้องลงทุนกับคนประเภทยากจนแต่พอเรียนได้ ให้มากๆ ดังนั้น พื้นฐานต้องยากจน กลายเป็นว่าถ้าเกิดมาร่ำรวยควรไปทำงานเอกชนดีกว่า เพราะอาจมีความก้าวหน้าได้ไวขึ้น เป็นเสียเช่นนั้น กลายเป็นจุดบอดให้ภาครัฐ บางจุด ไม่สามารถเติบโตได้ และไม่มีแรงจูงใจสูงพอที่จะรีครูตคนนอกเข้ามาด้วยอัตราค่าตอบแทนสูงๆ ทำให้ประเทศบับเคลื่อนได้ช้าต่างกับภาคเอกชน และคำว่า ธรรมาภิบาล หรือ การกระจายอำนาจของภาครัฐ หรือช่องว่างระหว่างคนรวยและคนจนที่ขยายกว้าง อย่างที่สหประชาชาติชอบอ้างบ่อยๆ เวลาไปประชุมร่วม ก็คงยากจะเกิดในประเทศที่ทำท่าจะเป็นผู้ให้ แต่ก็ทำตัวเป็นผู้รับอยู่เช่นนี้

โดยมีลักษณะงานที่ปฏิบัติในด้านต่าง ๆ ดังนี้

1. ด้านการปฏิบัติการ

(1) ศึกษา วิเคราะห์ วิจัย เพื่อสร้างองค์ความรู้ การเสนอความเห็นเกี่ยวกับความร่วมมือด้านต่างประเทศ การแสวงหาและเร่งรัดการดำเนินความร่วมมือเชิงรุกกับองค์กรระหว่าง ประเทศและนานาชาติ เพื่อให้เกิดประโยชน์สูงสุดแก่ประเทศ

(2) ให้ ข้อเสนอแนะ รวมทั้งกำหนดแนวทางและพัฒนาระบบการติดตามประเมินผล รวมทั้งแนวทางการแก้ปัญหาข้อขัดข้องในการปฏิบัติงาน เพื่อให้การดำเนินงานเป็นระบบและมีประสิทธิภาพ

(3) ให้ คำปรึกษา แนะนำ เสนอความเห็นและข้อเสนอแนะในการกำหนดยุทธศาสตร์และนโยบายความร่วมมือด้านการ ต่างประเทศ เพื่อให้สอดคล้องกับนโยบายและแผนพัฒนาเศรษฐกิจและสังคมของประเทศ

2. ด้านการวางแผน

วางแผนหรือร่วมดำเนินการวางแผน โดยเชื่อมโยงหรือบูรณาการแผนงาน โครงการในระดับกลยุทธ์ของส่วนราชการระดับกรม มอบหมายงานแก้ไขปัญหาในการปฏิบัติงานติดตาม ประเมินผล เพื่อให้บรรลุตามเป้าหมายผลสัมฤทธิ์ที่กำหนด

3. ด้านการประสานงาน

(1) ประสาน การทำงานโครงการต่าง ๆ กับบุคคล หน่วยงาน หรือองค์กรอื่น โดยมีบทบาทในการจูงใจ โน้มน้าวเพื่อให้เกิดความร่วมมือและผลสัมฤทธิ์ตามที่กำหนดไว้

(2) ให้ข้อคิดเห็นและคำ แนะนำ แก่หน่วยงานระดับกองหรือสำนัก รวมทั้งที่ประชุมทั้งในและต่างประเทศ เพื่อเป็นประโยชน์และเกิดความร่วมมือในการดำเนินงานร่วมกัน

4. ด้านการบริการ

(1) เป็น วิทยากร เผยแพร่ความรู้ ให้คำปรึกษา แนะนำและวินิจฉัยปัญหาเกี่ยวกับงานด้านต่างประเทศที่สำคัญแก่บุคคลหรือหน่วย งาน เพื่อ ให้สามารถดำเนินงานได้ลุล่วงเป็นไปตามนโยบายและแผนงานที่กำหนดไว้

Chancellor Angela Merkel's cabinet on Tuesday approved Germany's share of a trillion-dollar rescue package of loan guarantees for crisis-hit European countries amid reports she had been prodded by US President Barack Obama to take action.

"The measures send a clear signal that the markets can rely on the financial stability of the euro area and that speculating against the eurozone doesn't pay," deputy government spokesman Christoph Steegmans told a regular briefing.

Berlin is expected to provide at least €123 billion ($157 billion), but officials have warned that Germany's slice is likely to be higher - up to €150 billion - because countries for which the fund is designed will not be contributing.

The fund - the eurozone stabilisation mechanism - which was unveiled in the early hours of Monday after marathon talks in Brussels, has been dubbed "Shock and Awe" for its size and it was immediately cheered by markets.

But the New York Times reported on Tuesday that it took a phone call from Obama to convince Merkel that dramatic action was required. He stressed in the conversation late on Sunday that without "an overwhelming financial rescue" the future of the euro and the entire European Union was at stake.

Singapore, report cards: Hamilton unbeatable in the night. Button on the run, Vettel and Rosberg victims of his nerves

Who goes:
Sebastian Vettel (grade 3): It is presented in Singapore in tight battle for the title with the duo Brawn Grand Prix knowing that you have little chance of getting out the winner, but it complicates life itself thanks to a slow start that could make him lose precious seconds over the first. Recovered well and by mid race looks even able to trouble the riding of Hamilton, but then 'falls' into the trap of excessive speed in pit lane ruining everything. It 'also lucky, because in a different time of the Grand Prix could have made the end of Nico Rosberg, cut off the points. A wasted opportunity that will certainly weigh a ton of German psychological balance for the next event in Suzuka. There's little more to lose, yet the impression is that Vettel has yet to complete their maturation process before being able to focus seriously iris.

(CNN) -- Formula One legend Michael Schumacher has admitted his relief after visiting stricken Ferrari driver Felipe Massa in hospital.

The seven-time world champion has agreed to come out of retirement to replace Massa in the short term following the Brazilian's freak accident in Hungary which left him fighting for his life.

The 40-year-old had not previously had the time to visit Massa, last year's world championship runner-up, as he has been undergoing medical tests and getting up to speed for his eagerly-anticipated racing return by practicing in a 2007 Ferrari.

He told his personal Web site that he felt better after actually seeing Massa -- who is managed by Nicolas Todt, son of former Ferrari team boss Jean -- at Budapest's AEK hospital.

"Good that I finally made it to see Felipe, I feel better now. Even if I was in close contact with him via Nicolas and Jean and informed about everything, it still is better to see it with your own eyes," Schumacher said on Saturday.

"I am surprised at his extreme positive condition, as the accident was only one week ago. We sat together for around three hours and were chatting with each other. I really feel relieved now."

Schumacher said that he was tired and sore after Friday's sessions in the old Ferrari -- he is not allowed to drive a current model due to the testing ban this season.

"I have to say that today I feel muscles I was not even aware anymore that they exist," he said. "But then it was clear that you cannot test for a day after such a lot of time without feeling anything, and I am curious to see what will happen in the coming days."

Massa is expected to return home on Monday, just nine days after fracturing his skull in a freak accident during qualifying at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

He is continuing to make a good recovery after having emergency surgery for life-threatening injuries he sustained after being struck full on the helmet by a suspension spring that had fallen off the Brawn of fellow Brazilian Rubens Barrichello.

He was knocked unconscious and his car hurtled into a tire barrier at 200kph in the final qualifying for Sunday's race which was won by Lewis Hamilton, who pipped Massa to the world title last season.

Operated on at the AEK military hospital in Budapest, Massa spent two days in a medically-induced coma, but since coming around has improved rapidly.

His personal doctor, Dino Altmann, told reporters Friday that Massa had made rapid strides.

"He is doing very well, and we have already decided to go back home on Monday to Sao Paulo."

Altmann said he would complete his recuperation at home rather than returning to Europe.

"He is to continue his recovery and return to racing as soon as possible, that's the plan," added Altmann.

Early fears that Massa may have lost some sight in his left eye as a result of the accident appear to have receded, but he will be replaced at the European Grand Prix in Valencia in three weeks' time by Schumacher.

Schumacher visits recovering Massa

Michael Schumacher payed a short visit to his old team-mate and protege Felipe Massa in Budapest's AEK Hospital on Saturday.

The seven-time world champion tested a two-year old F2007, run by the F1 Clienti department of Ferrari, extensively on Friday as he prepares to stand in for the injured Brazilian in Valencia later this month.

His visit lasted 30 minutes, though he did not stop to speak to the press.

Former Ferrari boss Jean Todt also visited Massa in Budapest on Saturday morning, arriving separately to Schumacher.

Massa's personal doctor Dino Altman has already confirmed the driver will leave the hospital and be taken to his home in Brazil by a private plane on Monday.

The home side thrashed Milan 4-1 to meet a well-known opponent in the final match— both teams played an exciting Champions League final in 1991, when Manchester defeated Bayern near the ending.

BERLIN: The final of the Audi Cup football tournament will be played between English champions Manchester United and German club Bayern Munich.

Manchester United had disposed of Argentinian side Boca Juniors 2-1 to qualify for the final.

United looked to have wrapped it up by half-time as they scored both their goals with Anderson scoring a superb first goal for them in the 23rd minute with a stunning free kick which taken from the right hand side went in at the far corner of the goal.

In the 42nd minute, Antonio Valencia added a second goal three minutes from half-time as he fired in a powerful shot.

The Argentinian side came back strongly in the second-half inspired by playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme and deservedly got a goal back in the 55th minute.

In the second match, Bayern Munich humiliated Italian giants AC Milan 4-1 as they set up an Audi Cup final date with English champions Manchester United.

A double from promising youngster Thomas Muller and a goal apiece from German international midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger and Frenchman Saer Sene saw Bayern to an ultimately easy victory over Milan.

The 28-year-old Brazilian is currently in intensive care at the AEK military hospital in Budapest after suffering a fractured skull in a freak accident in qualifying for Saturday's Hungarian Grand Prix.

Massa's condition has improved in the past 24 hours with doctors taking him out of a medically-induced coma on Monday night.

He has since responded well to questions and Peter Bazso, the medical director of the hospital, claimed on Tuesday morning that Massa might be able to walk out of the hospital in 10 days' time.

"My expectation is that he would walk out of the hospital on his own. If his recovery continues, I wouldn't rule out that he could leave within 10 days," Bazso told Hungarian TV channel M1.

"He's spending more and more time awake, talking to family and friends. I would like to point out that, although he is recovering, this is not the end of the story, he is still in a life-threatening condition. Of course, the danger is decreasing by the day."

While the news regarding Massa's condition continues to be encouraging, behind the scenes Ferrari are faced with the task of finding a replacement driver.

Doctors have said Massa will be out for at least six weeks, although there are still fears he may never return as a result of his injuries.

He will certainly miss the European and Belgian Grands Prix at the end of August, although the current four-week break before the next race in Valencia gives the Italian team time to assess their options.

On the list of likely replacements could be Schumacher -- who won five of his drivers' titles with Ferrari and works as an advisor for the team.

The 40-year-old German's representative Sabine Kehm told CNN: "There is no offer from Ferrari, but if they decided they need him, Michael would certainly weigh his options."

Ferrari spokesman Luca Colajanni later confirmed to the Press Association that Schumacher, who retired in 2006, was an option.

"We have said before that it is possible that Michael Schumacher could return to help us out," said Colajanni. "However, we have two test drivers at Ferrari (Luca Badoer and Marc Gene) at the moment and Michael is an advisor.

Does safety need to be improved in Formula One?

"We have not spoken to him and we will have to wait and see what happens. It is something for (Ferrari team principal) Stefano Domenicali to consider over the coming weeks.

"We need to see how Felipe is and the situation will evolve from there. We are not in any hurry, the first and foremost thing is Felipe's recovery."

Colajanni also provided further encouraging news regarding Massa, although he played down Bazso's assertion that he could walk out of hospital as early as next week.

"I think that on Monday he improved a lot but we have to remain cautious," he said. "It is not useful to put forecasts on these things. I think for the moment we should just enjoy the positive improvements that Felipe is making."

Massa was hurt when a spring that had fallen from the back of Rubens Barrichello's Brawn GP car struck him on the helmet at high-speed, causing him to lose control of his car and crash into a tire barrier.

On Monday, Professor Robert Veres, the surgeon who operated on Massa over the weekend, told reporters that Massa had suffered some damage to his left eye, which could threaten his future in the sport.

"It's too early to say about his future as we don't know the extent of the damage. Without an operation it's very hard to evaluate the eye's function," said Vares.

Massa's crash came less than a week after Formula Two driver Henry Surtees, the son of former world champion John Surtees, was killed in similar circumstances, knocked unconscious by a tire which flew off another car in a race at Brands Hatch in England, before crashing.

Formula One's safety record has improved dramatically in recent years, with the last fatality in 1994 when the legendary Brazilian Ayrton Senna crashed at Imola.

German ace Michael Schumacher is widely recognised as being the world's best ever racing driver. In 1995 Michael became the (at that time) youngest double Formula 1 World Champion (1994 and 1995 seasons) ever. He is also the 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 World Champion. This phenomenal record speaks for itself. His sixth title in 2003 beat Juan Manuel Fangio's long standing record of five championships from the 1950s! Schuey has now retired from F1 as a driver, since the end of the 2006 season. Michael was then retained in a consultancy role by Ferrari.

Michael's last championship title in 2004 was secured before the season end, taking his total number of titles to 7. Memorably, he did this by finishing 2nd at Spa in Belgium, in Ferrari's 700th race, to accumulate enough points to seal the deal.

Michael also holds the F1 records for: most career wins (91), most wins in a season, most career pole positions, most points during a season (148 in 2004), most consecutive world championships (5), most consecutive race wins (2004), most podium finsihes (154), most laps leading, most fastest laps (76), plus several others!

Michael was at one point the highest paid racing driver in the world and second highest earning sportsman in the world, earning a reported $80 million US in 2004 ($40m of which was his salary from Ferrari). His younger brother Ralf became the third highest paid driver in Formula 1 in 1999, and his pay after the 2000 season was raised to US$15.5 million.

Michael hired as a consultant to Ferrari

On retiring from Formula 1 as a racing driver at the end of the 2006 season, Michael was retained in the role of consultant by Ferrari.

Michael's role is to lend his experience to help in many areas, including with race and road car development and advicsing the F1 team. In this role he attends some races.

Other key names also changed positions in Ferrari when Schuey retired as an F1 driver. Technical Director Ross Brawn took a sabbatical and later joined the Honda team as Team Principal. Team Principal Jean Todt saw out one more season and then moved up the ladder to become CEO of Ferrari (a position he then resigned in March 08).

Seemed that a significant majority weren't too keen on Schuey's role as a shampoo salesman. Someone else obviously agreed, as the ads only ran for a short time before being pulled from TV! His Manager...
Michael's manager since 1989 has been Willi Weber. Schumacher was to receive a free drive in his WTS team for three years, Weber in return is reported to receive 20% of all income Michael earns from motor races. The initial agreement was to last 10 years, however it was later extended for a further several years.

His Helmet...
Michael explains how his helmet's paint scheme came about:
"From the area of the visor you see the traditional German black-red-gold. I chose the colours years ago with a friend of mine and I changed it only slightly, mostly to include sponsor decals. The blue circle with the white stars on the top was his idea. After joining Ferrari I added the prancing horse on the back. "

Since the European GP in 2000, Michael has raced with a modified helmet design. The blue circle on the top in now painted light red. The white Marlboro stripe around the top is also now red. The change was made to prevent confusion between himself and Barrichello, whose design was confusingly similar.

Schuey entered only one race for Jordan - which was his F1 debut at Spa Francorchamps in 1991. He qualified 7th but in the race the clutch burnt out and he didn't make it off the grid. He was standing in for Bertrand Gachot, who had been jailed in London just before the GP for an assault with CS gas on a taxi driver!

Michael is Ferrari's most successful driver ever, ahead of Niki Lauda.

47 years ago...and now...next year on tiger year..i will be completly 48 years old...

i borned under influence of new moon...so i never scare anything although that is the secret inside darkness...maybe look like my depart..borned after me two days...

and very strange thing that in my birth day...the brightly stardust over my sunrise birth time are jupitor and venus..that make me full of alert about knowledge and life ...

in black night....with sun,moon and mercury nearly close ..venus look very ...very...springle..so look like i am love to decorate myself and full of self of belonging in my properties and assets i behave rule..sometime i am very dump into saving style and look luxury taste on convenient as human being 's life must be..

but my venus click my heart to invite nice fresh relation and relationship to many people and stunned some to...follow my life...

maybe they can get the better creativity and innovate activities from my warning...critisizing...or cliaming..complaining...for some of low chance people in this world..

few people can touch...

i know that gap of development countries...make us more and more far away from each other..

Day turned into night, temperatures turned cooler in cities and villages teemed with amateur stargazers.

The total eclipse started in India on Wednesday morning and moved eastward across Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Vietnam, China and parts of the Pacific. Millions cast their eyes towards the heavens to catch a rare view of the sun's corona.

Cloud cover in some areas prevented people from fully savoring the phenomenon. Still, many were awed.

Tim O'Rourke, a 45-year-old freelance photographer from Detroit, Michigan, lives in Hong Kong but traveled up to Shanghai -- touted as one of the best spots to watch the eclipse. Watch the 'exceptional' eclipse »

"It was pitch black like midnight," said O'Rourke, standing in People's Square with what appeared to be a crowd of thousands.

"Definitely not disappointed we came. Of course it would have been much better with nice weather, blue skies. But still it was a great experience, it was a lot of fun." he said. Viewing the eclipse in pictures »

Clinton: Full disclosure with Iraqis on any talks with insurgents

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Friday she was only recently made aware of reconciliation talks between U.S. diplomats and Sunni insurgents in Iraq, and she promised to keep the Iraqi government informed about such discussions in the future.

“We intend to make sure the Iraqi government is fully informed of any such activities,” Clinton told reporters following a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki. “We want a close working relationship.”

Iraqi officials said Friday they were investigating reports of the meetings, calling them a violation of Iraqi sovereignty. The reports, which detail a supposed signed agreement between the Americans and insurgents, have angered Iraqis as they seek to establish their authority in the wake of the withdrawal of American troops from Iraqi cities.

Al-Maliki said he was “satisfied” with what he heard from Clinton, who assured him the United States would not negotiate with any extremists who killed Iraqi or American troops.

Ali al-Jubouri, identified as the secretary-general of the Political Council of the Iraqi Resistance, told Al-Jazeera his group held talks with U.S. officials in March and in May and signed a “protocol to organize the negotiation process and a document that included U.S. recognition of the Iraqi resistance.”

The State Department acknowledged unspecified meetings took place months ago but said the Iraqi government knew about them at the time.

Deputy State Department Spokesman Robert Wood said Friday that the meetings were part of a wide range of U.S. contacts with Iraqis to promote political reconciliation.

“The meetings in question occurred months ago and with the knowledge of officials within the Iraqi government,” Wood said. “Having spent the past six years helping Iraq build a representative and effective democratic government, the last thing we would do is take any action intended to undercut it.”

A senior administration official told CNN that embassy officials did sign a protocol document with the group about logistics for the third round of talks. When the talks were scrapped, he said, the document was leaked.

But Clinton, who said the talks were “only recently brought to my attention,” said the State Department “did not authorize” the signing such a protocol.

U.S. diplomatic and military officials have negotiated with Sunni insurgents in the past with some success, most notably persuading Sunni tribal leaders to turn against al Qaeda, which has been cited as a key factor for the reduction of violence in 2007.

The reports of the meetings come as al-Maliki wrapped up a visit to the United States after meeting President Barack Obama on Wednesday.

On Friday Clinton held two hours of talks with al-Maliki about the future strategic partnership between the U.S. and Iraq, in which they agreed to cooperate on a wide range of issues, ranging from education to trade to tourism.
