Although Thailand is widely seen as a tropical country, I still get people asking me whether it snows in Thailand. The truth is, the closest most Thais will get to snow is when they visit the Bangkok amusement park Dream World. But, Thailand’s climate is varied and during the winter there is frost on the mountain tops in Northern Thailand. There has even been hailstorms that leave the ground white like snow. Back in 1955 there were reports that hail fell in flakes just like snow. But all of this happens in winter. What about summer? Yesterday temperatures in many areas in Thailand hit 40C. But despite this, a freak summer storm yesterday surprised these motorists in Chiang Mai province. There was even enough for them to make “snowballs” out of the hailstones.

Beijing will be the first city ever to stage the Summer and Winter Games. Chinese President Xi Jinping has extended his congratulations on the Chinese capital winning the right to host the 2022 Winter Olympics.
